As Christmas travel ramps up across Houston, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office is inviting residents to register their homes for its annual vacation watch program. Deputies will monitor participating homes while families are out of town, providing an extra layer of security during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year.
The Sheriff’s Office launched its holiday sign‑up period this week as residents prepare for extended holiday trips. The program allows deputies to conduct periodic checks of registered homes, especially in neighborhoods that often see increased burglary attempts during December.
Officials noted that criminals often target empty homes during long travel periods. Because of that risk, the voluntary watch service aims to deter break‑ins, offer peace of mind, and keep more patrol units circling residential areas.
Residents can register online and provide details such as travel dates, emergency contacts, vehicles left at the property, and any special concerns. Deputies then incorporate the home into their routine patrol routes.
Houston routinely experiences a surge in holiday travel, with millions leaving the region during late December. That shift can leave homes vulnerable, especially in areas with heavy commuter populations or frequent deliveries. With more people away, thieves look for empty driveways and dark windows.
The Sheriff’s Office program helps counter those risks by increasing patrol visibility. It also keeps families connected to law enforcement while they are out of town, which strengthens community trust.
Local business owners benefit as well. Increased patrols help safeguard small shops, home‑based offices, and residential properties used for short‑term rentals.
Residents living in unincorporated Harris County can complete the online registration form through the Sheriff’s Office website. The process takes only a few minutes. After signing up, participants receive confirmation and instructions about what deputies will check during patrols.
Officials recommend signing up as early as possible, since travel peaks between December 20 and January 2. Early registration also helps patrol units plan their routes efficiently.
The Sheriff’s Office will continue to promote the program as Christmas approaches. Deputies will begin increased holiday patrols in early December, and the vacation watch service will stay active through New Year’s Day.
Residents can also take additional steps to protect their property, including using timers for lights, securing packages, and asking neighbors to keep an eye out for unexpected activity.
